In August 2014 my mom was diagnosed with lung cancer. With that news, I became not only her loving son but also her primary care manager. In December of that same year, cancer took her life. It was a devastating and life changing four months. In a very short time I was forced to face hard truths about life, death, family, relationships good and bad, and the unimaginable depths of great loss.
This painting, from the series This Is Not The End, was completed in 2013 before Mom got sick. Her death from cancer has added new meaning to the piece. In the beginning, it was simply a loving portrait. I realize now, it's ultimately about love and tragic loss. It's about the value and frailty of life, the brutality of death and the complexity of family relationships.
